The Mosvalve power amps are really underrated for their price as well. I see someone in my area is selling the rack version of this with the Mosvalve Power Amp (which is built into the combo) for $250. I'm more just leaving this out there for any TGP reader that sees a good deal on one of these. 'Warm' doesn't begin to do them justice if you find good old stock with plenty of life left.

I'd had a Chandler Tube Driver (BK Butler designed these but some of them deviate slightly from his design) previously which I didn't like as much but had only ever used the stock AX7 in that. I have Mullard 12AU7s in both my BK Butler Tube Driver and my Demeter Tube Direct DI. This has given me the best setup for my preferences for bass.

I have configured the preamp with a 12AU7 on the second gain channel plus one of the original 12AX7s. This can be controlled from a footswitch. You can configure for each channel individually or stack the two. I'm not the only one to think this and that's pretty much why I bought (i.e., it was a good deal and I wanted to try it with a tube swap). This unit has 2-channels, one clean the other with additional gain/dirt. The Telefunken AT7 I put made it sound warmer, smoother, and a lot less gain-y.

I'm not going to tell you to go try another one just to prove me right/wrong but if you have happened upon on a good deal on one (pedal, combo, or rack) on the Tube Drivers and less gain is your thing consider swapping it out for an AU7 or AT7. True story, and I’ve never won a bet since.įor me, the key to getting a good tone out of these is swapping out the tubes. The store owner got such a kick out of it, he gave me the rig for $850 out the door. We stopped by shop, just as they were locking up, and I held up the $800, Wayne’s World style. I put $4 on a daily double, on the first bet I ever made in my life and won $800. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but I didn’t have much money to bet, so I figured I would only bet the longshots. I joked to the guy in the store, “hey we’re going to the race track if I win anything I’ll come back and buy it.” It was listed at $999, which might as well have been 1 million for me at that time. On the way I asked if we could stop by my favorite music store, where I spotted the tube Works rig. PS: I was 21, and my in-laws at the time wanted to take us to the race track. However, I Any questions please don't hesitate to ask - collection available from East Sheen (Richmond area), South West London if one prefers. My first “real” gigging setup, about 92-94 was a small rack with the Tube Driver Preamp and MosValve Stereo power amp into vertical 212. It was also based on a solid state circuit with a single starved voltage tube in it where the actual overdrive took place. David Gilmour is a famous example of this pedal at work. You will not get a lot of battery life out of these so PSU is probably advisable anyway. BK Butler had perhaps their greatest success with the Tube Driver distortion pedal which is still highly regarded in certain circles. Somewhere along the way one got into the hands of a guitarist. When the results turned out to sound great, he called it the Tube Driver, and made a few of them for friends. This is well worn (read 'loved'?) Doesn't seem to work with Battery (probably battery clip) but I never needed to fix it as it works perfectly when using a power supply. Around 1975, keyboardist Brent Butler created a tube overdrive for his organ out of an old tube phonograph preamp housed in a Radio Shack enclosure. Van Halen signature version with 'Script' and 'Block' settings. * SOLD* Big box reissue with original box. Only selling because I own a Strymon Mobius and a Boss CE-2 so well stocked in chorus land! A fantastic chorus pedal that can do a pretty darn good rotary speaker impression at high settings. *SOLD* Original japanese black box model. Guitar Man Volume Pedal - £10 £5 *SOLD* (including the cheapest shipping I can find.) Very cheap. Screamer type OD but without that annoying 'Bass-cut' quality the Ibanez It’s kind of like having a section of your amp right in a pedal. *SOLD* Original version with Dinosaur Logo. The Tube Driver houses a preamp tube and it generates distortion by overdriving the tube rather than conventional pedal methods. These haven't been made for years and their availability is dwindling. These are the tubes that BK Butler put in pedals for players like Eric Johnson and David GIlmour. I bought this after I had owned the Tube Driver for a while, it makes a tremendous difference and really is the perfect tube for a 'Starved Plate' design overdrive pedal. Comes with the Electro Harmonix tube that was originally included.Įi 'Yugo' Tube (12ax7) - £50 £40 shipped.
